Headmaster’s Question Time

Wednesday’s assembly is Headmaster’s Question Time: my responding to questions from the Bedales students (following a soulful piece of saxophone from Evie C). Questions are all good and searching, enabling the matters that are on students’ minds to be, at the very least, aired – and in certain cases to lead into further exploration of underlying issues. In order of their asking: why are students’ not allowed access to all the grounds; the Badley Celebration Weekend – where now; what about Merrie Evening (yes let’s make it happen); students’ rights regarding Facebook privacy (if you take photographs of yourself doing things you shouldn’t be doing in school and post them on the internet, don’t be daft, expect consequences…); rock music’s place vis-a-vis classical music; transparency of the student-led committees (yes, we should publish all this); students’ access to internet sites – a cup-cake recipe site apparently blocked; if Bedales is at its best when innovating, what are the plans for future innovations (some underway, albeit not on the scale of Bedales Assessed Courses); has the rule of thumb regarding suspension warnings changed (no); and do we need to build a new Art & Design block (yes).
